"I have been a patient at Woodstock Bower since around 2009 and every single appointment has been an absolute shambles trying to arrange.
From the first available appointments been 2-3 weeks ahead and always advised to ring back first thing in the morning. Then ringing from 8am and been unable to get through at all, the line gives an engaged tone. Then getting past the engaged tone and spending 25 minutes in the que, to have a 30 second conversation with a rude receptionist to be told there’s no appointments
There is now an answering message saying the receptionists would like to ask a few questions to help determine the urgency of a patients symptoms. Are they working from a triage system? It certainly does not feel as though there questions are supported by any system. It feels although the receptionist with absolutely no medical qualification is making a decision on whether you can see a GP based on their personal experience.
On the rare occasion I have managed to get a same day appointment I have been in the waiting room for up to 40 minutes after my appointment time. The waiting room is unwelcoming and the receptionists are almost hiding their faces by all the junk and leaflets on their window.
So to be more specific. My mother suddenly died at the age of 30 of a rare heart condition which I have found after speaking to a cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation that this can be an inherited heart condition. She was shocked that my GP had never picked up on this previously.
BHF sent me a letter and also a letter addressed to my GP the following day. The nurse was very clear I was to make an urgent appointment and this needed to be face- to face. I needed to “put the letter in the doctors’ sweaty palm”. This letter states I should be referred to the Northern general hospital for specialist genetic testing.
I received this letter on 7 December 2018. Since receiving this letter I have rung Woodstock Bower 72 times to either the line be engaged, be told there no appointments or to call back in the morning.
Today, on 5th February I called at 8am and the line was engaged. I waited around 30 mins before getting in my car and driving to the surgery. I arrived for 8:45 and to be told there was no appointments and to ring tomorrow. I was not standing for this. I got very upset and demanded at the very least a telephone consultation. The GP rang me back quickly and I explained my problem. He asked why this had never been tested before … because my doctors surgery is utterly useless.
I was offered an appointment 8 days later - 9 weeks after been sent this letter.
Now can someone please tell me how this is acceptable? My mum died at 30 and I am 24, I have no previous testing for this condition and have endured 9 weeks of pure worry due to the appointment system at my GP surgery."
