"I rang to make an appointment and was asked my name. I uttered my name, and was rudely met with: WHAT?????? Er, my name isn't a WHAT, it refers to me, a living human being. I think the more polite term is "pardon me", "sorry can you please repeat" or "I didn't get that...?". Please ask your staff to understand that not every human in England is named Jack Lad or Jane Lass.

I was asked to email the secretary of a consultant I hope to see. So as to save time and the need for to-ing and fro-ing, I wanted to be thorough in my letter to the lady so I can move on to having an appointment and treatment ASAP. I only knew that I saw a Dr X today. She was absolutely lovely. Really lovely experience with her, she was very kind, very professional and really sweet. I needed her first name so that there would be no confusion, no need for anyone to ask me anything more. I went to the Buxted and East Hoathly website, and there's a list of about seven doctors on there. There is no Dr X listed on there. Sigh.

I ring reception and someone answers. I ask the good doctor's first name. Dear lord it was like pulling teeth.

The woman said she's not sure she can give out the doctor's first name, she's never been asked before.

I say I'm writing a letter to the secretary of a consultant I plan on seeing, they will need a referral letter, and I need to say who I saw today : provide a real doctor's name and get my appointment.

Clearly, I wasn't fooling this woman at reception. She hmmed and hawwed, and then said that she'll need to check about giving out the doctor's name.

I explained, barely resisting the urge to scream in frustration, that their own website lists SEVEN doctors' first and last names. She seemed to think that only the partner at the practice would have their name out in the dangerous, terrifying internet. I read off the list of doctor's names to her.

Oh well, that wasn't good enough for detective do-little. She then told me she's not comfortable giving out the doctor's name. She's going to check with the management. Not sure why that's my concern at all.

She finally gave me a name that's supposed to be the first name of Dr X.

Seriously, please update your website, make staff aware that a doctor's first name is not secret data. If your staff can have access to MY name, MY address, MY date of birth, MY blood results, MY information, then I don't expect to be made like some kind of deviant, criminal, stalker or crazy person for daring to ask for a doctor's first name.

And please can you explain to your staff that not everyone is called Mr Smith, or Ms Smith. If they are too unaware to hear or even be polite when hearing a name they can't deal with, that's not my issue. That's their problem. Some basic manners would be a really good start.

I had rung yesterday for an appointment. I was too late. The lady who answered was very abrupt. Couldn't wait to get rid of me. Shocking reception staff. Rude, unprofessional and amateur."
