"I recently accompanied my partner to a nurse appointment following his diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. I came away really disappointed with the advice offered, which amounted to "everything in moderation". That advice might be fine for the healthy population, but when you have been diagnosed with a serious condition like diabetes I do feel it is important to be more specific about actual changes you can make to improve your health outcomes.
Despite relaying to the nurse my partner's alcohol consumption is between 24-30 units a week, she did not recommend cutting down, because "everything in moderation", and "It's important to still have a life". Therefore, the advice was to continue to try and have 1-2 days alcohol-free. I have to ask do all medical professionals view the NHS alcohol consumption guidelines as worthless? He left the appointment with the understanding his alcohol consumption did not need to change, as advised by a qualified medical professional. Yet it's the alcohol that has contributed the obesity and subsequent diabetes.
So, I suppose now we just wait for the impending cardiovascular disease. But at least we know he has a life, even if it is to the cost of his health, and to the cost and time of the NHS."
