"The current standard of access is absolutely unacceptable. Whilst I recognise nationally and locally there is a GP recruitment crisis and NHS services are under increasing stress and pressure thIs surgery does not meet basic patient needs. The practice is not well led and managed and does not meet the fundamental core principal of delivering a health care service if appointments are not accessible to all demographics. Unfortunately, the practice is declining rapidly.Over the past few months I have had difficulties getting an appointment and I know others having similar difficulties including family members. A non urgent appointment is impossible to get within a reasonable time frame let alone an early morning or late afternoon appointment to fit in with working commitments. When ringing for an appointment to be told there are no future bookable appointments and to try again next week is ludicrous. Getting through to the receptionist alone is a challenge and the waiting time to speak to someone can be extensive. Alternatively you are advised to ring on the morning to get a same day appointment which are meant to be allocated to emergencies, however, staff acknowledged (to be fair they're doing the best they can) that most patients now use these slots for routine appointments as it’s too long to wait for non urgent access. In theory a same day appointment sounds acceptable and it is for those who can queue outside the practice doors. Those doors open ten or fifteen minutes prior to telephone access and if like me you are already at work miles away from the surgery your chance of securing an appointment via telephone is very slim. That is if you do manage to firstly get through and secondly if there are any appointments left. My issues in getting an appointment are not limited to a drs I have difficulty arranging a nurse appointment. It is widely publicised the importance of attending regular cervical cancer screening. However, appointments for a smear test are limited and not accessible once again to the working population. I am currently waiting 38 days for a routine smear which was the next available afternoon appointment unfortunately mid afternoon. Waiting times once you finally have an appointment if you've waited on the doorstep before opening are long. With a growing population in Crawcrook I expect these already poor services to unfortunately further decline in the future."
