"I have been a member of the surgery for over 2 years, and never once during that time have I been able to get an appointment. The comments from the receptionists have ranged from 'we don't do appointments' to 'I haven't got an appointment for a child today' (confusing - are there only certain days on which they can see a child?).

Having spoken to the practice manager today, after being on hold for around 10 mins, I was yet again told I'd have to use the out of hours service or go to A and E. I pointed out that it wasn't an accident or emergency, but to no avail. Last time I visited the out of hours service, the doctor gave me a temporary solution and told me I should go and see the GP.

I raised the issue (with the practice manager) that I have never been able to get an appointment there, and she informed me they either need to be made a week in advance, or I need to be able to join the phone queue at 8 (which their website says is the busiest time and best to avoid). This isn't an option for me as I'm working then and can't sit in a phone queue (the last time I tried this, I needed to then be available to answer the phone so that somebody could phone me back, in order to assess if I needed an appointment).

Finally, it was explained to me, that if I wasn't happy with the service, I was welcome to go to another GP surgery. When I asked the practice manager if she was indeed actually saying that I should go somewhere else, she backtracked and said that wasn't what she'd meant. 4 times during the conversation the practice manager spoke over me and said I sounded very unhappy - which adequately describes how I feel (at the thought of having to go and sit in A and E for 4 hours with a young child, and having to travel 4 miles or so to get there in freezing weather - that would make the most optimistic person unhappy, I think). I think it's quite bizarre to challenge the fact that I might feel unhappy and that saying 'go somewhere else' is an adequate answer.

My question remains: what do I have to do to gain access to a GP? I am a hard working, tax and national insurance paying member of the community who doesn't want to overstretch the A and E dept by going there unnecessarily. I investigated private medical insurance, but as it transpires, I would still have to go to the GP I don't have access to, in order to get a referral."
