So often in life only the complaints are heard and the good service taken for granted without comment or a signal of appreciation. Like practices across the country, Harleton Medical Practice is under considerable pressure, but has consistently served the sometimes serious needs of my family extremely well, which I would like to put on formal record.
Over the last few years, the managing GPs have sought to address the difficult issue of making access to appointments timely, fair and simple.
Recently a very helpful and new way of engaging with the GPs has been introduced which in my view works extremely well. The system requires patientâs to call a medical receptionist before 10.30am, who takes initial information about the patientâs needs. This information is passed to the GP who will firstly call and discuss the symptoms on the phone, offer advice and direct and make an appointment for the patient to visit a GP in the surgery as necessary. This way everyone who needs to speak to a GP will be able to do so on the day, thus avoiding hitherto problems of the lottery of whether you can get through to the surgery first thing in the morning on the phone as everyone vies to get through (if it is not permanently engaged) only to find that all appointments have been taken, and that the same could happen on subsequent days; the pressure is off.
Unfortunately over recent years my family has had to rely on the GPs and nurses in this practice and the assistance of administrative staff to a considerable degree. I can unequivocally and unreservedly say that throughout these scores and scores of visits we have received nothing other than faultless support and compassionate advice.
While the practice staff have in the past sought to do their best for patients, they have done so under considerable pressures of the demands from the community. The introduction of the new pre-phone system has not only ensured everyone needing to speak to a doctor can do so promptly, but it has also made working conditions for practice staff engaging with patients more relaxed and pleasant by removing disappointment and frustration on finding that all appointments had been taken on that day. Perhaps most importantly those âless pushyâ in obtaining appointments by the old systems are not disadvantaged.
There is perhaps another side which we who depend on the GPs and nurses need to keep uppermost in our minds, that is an appreciation of the pressure that GPs, nurses and admin staff work under and the responsibilities they shoulder multiple times each day and â¦.. that â¦. behind the professional shell there are people with the same feelings of hurt at unpleasant comments like everyone else.
