"I rang the Healing Surgery at 8.30 am today to make an appointment, firstly the message tells me that a care navigator will ask me a few questions so they can appoint me in the best way. After the message the engaged tone came so I had to hang up. On trying the second time, I again listened to the message about the care navigator so I was fully expecting the receptionist to ask me lots of questions. This she did not do, I asked for an appointment not expecting it to be that day but she did offer me 1.40 that day, so I accepted it.
I arrived at 1.35 and waited about 22 minutes. On entering the doctors consulting room, the first thing he said to me was 'you do know you are taking up an urgent book on the day appointment. I said no, I didn't know, no-one had mentioned that to me, he again said you do know you are taking up urgent on the day appointment, again I said that the receptionist had not told me that. The doctor then said he would speak to the receptionist about this. I was a little upset by this time and said I did not know I was taking up an urgent book on the day appointment. The doctor by this time asked my why I was there and said he would still consult with me. I was upset by this time and fighting back tears told him why I was there.
On reflection, I did not give him a good history of my symptoms, came out not really knowing what would happen or if I was being referred. While I was waiting in the waiting room for 22 minutes, I read all the posters and not one mentioned how the appointment system works. The receptionist did not act as care navigator, she did not ask me one question as to why I needed an appointment. Neither did she tell me I was taking up an urgent on the day appointment.
I feel very disappointed and now angry as I do myself work within the NHS and feel that I will looking to move surgery soon."
