"I think the latest practice of sending patients to see a non doctor, could be a paramedic, to evaluate if you need to actually see a GP, is very wrong and also potentially dangerous. A paramedic is not a doctor and is no real position to make decisions he or she has no idea about other than perhaps a vague knowledge of the patients problem. I was sent to see such a person for an ongoing problem and from the very beginning it became clear that what I was saying was not being taken into account. To look up symptoms on a screen to find an answer is seriously wrong and an indication of the practitioners lack of knowledge. That is the sort of service one expects from 111. I have a very serious life threatening condition and this was not brought up once. It was not brought up by myself either as I deemed it a waste of time to do so. Fortunately I have the option of going to a London clinic if the need ever arises, at any time day or night. Due to my health problem the person I saw should, in my opinion, have immediately sent me to see a GP asap. As all my records were visibly available there was no excuse to say they weren't aware. Shocking really. Part of the blame must be laid fairly and squarely at the feet of the management. When calling in for an appointment one is subjected to a message asking caller to be very precise so the receptionist knows who to get you to see. For very obvious reasons this is not a good idea at all. The receptionist is not any sort of medical practitioner and is in no position to make such a decision. How does she decide? It also places the receptionist in an unfair position. Does she send me to see a nurse or nurse practitioner? So here we are almost at the end of my complaint and back to the beginning again. If a patient with a serious life threatening condition calls for an appointment, for whatever reason, as it could be related, they should be given one right away asap with e GP. I am aware of people being referred to see a GP who should really have been sent to see a nurse. This really is a dangerous and unsafe method of working. Yes, I accept that there are few doctors at this practice, but PLEASE try to refer those who should be referred to one to actually see one and not to rely on staff who are not likely to have the knowledge regarding serious conditions."
