"I wish to thank the two receptionists who were able to provide care and reassurance recently when I was was extremely distraught and upset. While they could not resolve my immediate problem, they had sufficient knowledge of hospital procedures to reassure me and provided advice on addressing the issue with the hospital early next day.
I have recently received a cancer diagnosis and had been referred for a PET/CT scan and a CT with contrast scan to determine treatment options. My problem is I am claustrophobic and also am unable to lie flat on my back due to a chronic back problem, both issues needing sedation and/or painkillers to permit a scan, both of which have to be provided via the GP surgery not the hospital. A prescription for a sedative was issued without problem and I planned to use my breakthrough pain medication to address the pain issue.
The evening before the first scan, the hospital informed me that I could not use Oramorph prior to the procedure as it could interfere with the scan, they could not suggest an alternative and stated I should consult my surgery as their office was now closed. With only an hour until the surgery closed, I was extremely upset and agitated when I contacted them. The GPs were unable to help without personal knowledge of the PET/CT procedure and could only refer me back to the closed hospital department.
Receptionist was able to reassure me and formulate a plan, including early attendance for my appointment and a form of words to use once there. This plan worked, within minutes of arrival for my appointment, I had received clearance to use my breakthrough painkiller in sufficient time for it to work before going into the scanner. Please thank all the staff for their help during an extremely distressing time for me."
