"Like many other people, I have a gamut of medical issues, which can be personally challenging to cope with on a daily basis. I am not alone. As we all know, our beloved heath service is under great strain from being over subscribed and under resourced. This pressure on resources is also taxed further as we are living longer. Austerity measures from central government has forced GP surgeries nationwide to work longer hours for less funding for an ever expanding growth in patient numbers. This is just fact.
When I see people complain that they can not see 'their' GP today or phone halfway through the day and can not get an appointment to see a GP it makes me a little frustrated that people plainly do not understand how stretched and busy our GP surgeries are.
Our own North Brink has extended surgery hours to 8pm on 2 days a week but more importantly they have introduced Nurse Practitioners as an inspired move to help make the most of our GPs extremely valuable time.
Most of the people complaining about not seeing their assigned GP do not understand the changes government have had on a GPs time. The scope of their work is now much more than just seeing patients. They are an extremely over subscribed resource.
A big percentage of patients going to surgeries are easily dealt with by the excellent Nurse practitioners. On one of the rare occasions a GPs decision was needed with a couple of my appointments, they have been called in with the Nurse and dealt with it in less than a minute. The nursing staff is highly trained and because they are on the 'sharpe end' are just as capable of dealing with patients issues 9/10. They do a fantastic job.
I understand that people may need to re-adjust from the traditional ways of doing things but how can they complain that they can not get an appointment, but when offered one by a Nurse led team, still complain? I know we all get stuck in our ways but come on people, lets pull together a bit and use the fantastic resource we have now been given. If 100 GPs were taken on at the North Brink tomorrow I would still happily see a nurse practitioner, if appropriate, for most of my visits.
A big heart felt thank you, Nurses of the North Brink. You are under-appreciated and under-valued but I for one value your skills, knowledge and caring bedside manner. Keep up the great work keeping our Heath Service above water."
