"If I had one real negative to say about Riverside Surgery but this would apply to all Doctors surgeries I believe, is the way Doctors surgeries are run now.
Unless you are going to them so regular they know you well and all your history off hand. But if your not so regular but have a long medical record, from hospitals and past Doctors, they simply have no idea of your history and it is often down to the patient to go through it all, which can be tiresome to do every time you see a Doctor. Obviously, they do not have time to go through all your notes there's not enough time for them to do this. I think an update is well overdue on the Doctors computer system, I think when they bring up a patients name on their system, the first page should contain the patients most important health history along with the last two visits they had. This way at a glance and even before seeing the patient they can see what health issue's this person has or has had in the past and even colour coded in importance to be conscious of.
Then based on this information can see if the patient's visit is related to any of patients past history, cutting down the time on diagnoses, and importantly knowing who their patient is and what they have gone through.
Gone are the days when you had the same Doctor for years and they really knew you as a person and your history. I say this from experience, as there have been many times when I would have to explain to a Doctor what surgery I had had in the past or health conditions I believe to be connected to the way I'm feeling or just what my last visit was about. We are now more and more dependant on technology but it seems the UK is very much behind on how much more this can be used to help Doctors and patients. I am sad to say I self-diagnosed two of my health conditions and took the data to my doctor to get further investigations which lead to a formal diagnosis, many patients just will not be able to do this kind of research or too ill to do it. I shouldn't have needed to do this on my own. Updates on computer systems to highlight past blood test out of range over a period of years can give a lot of information to a well-informed Doctor and a complete "most important health conditions" page would go a long way in knowing the patient and a whole person approach to any health problems they have. The NHS is still very disjointed and this is a problem to patients care, If we all need to pay another 2p on taxes to get the NHS system up to date then please do it"
