"It is difficult to get through for a same-day appointment at 8am as I cannot stay on the phone for long enough to get through. Pre-bookable appointments are few and usually so far off in the future as to be next to useless. Despite numerous attempts to get a same-day GP appointment, I have never been able to get through to the receptionist at any time close to 8am, as the lines are always busy for too long.
I had to take myself to the minor injuries unit in Horsham at around 11am today, due to the excruciating pain I was suffering . The triage nurse kindly called The Village Surgery on my behalf to request a GP callback and prescription for the agony I was in, and I was sent home to wait for the call.
I waited until 3.30pm before calling the surgery to find out whether a call would be coming and the receptionist politely took my details before starting to laugh. Apparently, the doctor had signed off the prescription much earlier in the day but had not notified reception that they needed to contact me, so I wasted an entire afternoon in agonising pain and unable to work. This was shocking and upsetting for two reasons: the lack of communication that left me waiting in pain and the callous disregard for the first point that the receptionist proceeded to show. There was no sympathy or apology and, when I mentioned that my partner would have to pick up the prescription because of the pain I was in, the receptionist responded that "it's all so silly, isn't it?".
There is no circumstance where a person in pain waiting and suffering needlessly should be seen as cause for amusement. It should never be treated as a "whoops, nevermind!" scenario.
A little sensitivity training and perhaps some more staff would go a long way."
