"Having forwarded my concerns to the Care Quality Commission, The Clinical Commissioning Group which is in the City, the chief medical officer for the County, then NHS England I know they are aware of the difficulties facing this surgery. The practice is owned by IMH and they are responsible for the recruitment and management of the Practice.
One of the problems is the contract offered to the medical professionals. Whilst we have a situation where Doctors who are locums can earn double that of salaried doctors per hour with none of the responsibility of paperwork the latter will dessert to work as a locum! Doctors are like anyone else, they go for the money despite the appearance of altruism. While I feel the practice does its best to give continuity of care with locum doctors, the latter will probably continue until their contracts are altered and brought into line with salaried doctors and the shortage of doctors can be addressed.
I have written to the CCG in the city and asked them to explore getting money from the CCG in the County as Assarts is in the County. IMH runs Bilborough, which is in the City as well as owning Assarts which is in the County.
The last two occasions I have had need to go to the surgery, I have found the nurses and doctors very professional and willing to act. My referral to hospital was fast and enacted far faster than last time. There is still a problem with the desk staff at both surgeries who get their wires crossed. I was given an appointment at both surgeries! Fortunately I texted them to cancel one!
Despite this minor hiccup they do seem to be getting better with more services available.. The locums still need a briefing paper to enlighten them where the telephone numbers they are given for referrals, are directed.
It is very disappointing that Assarts has been reduced to three days a week as not all patients can drive to Bilborough. With a patient panel of nearly 9000 there is need for an independent practice in the County and this needs to be addressed by the Chief Medical Officer and the CCG so if enough people write to them, the situation may be addressed.
Public pressure to improve things may help our elected local representatives to increase funding so we, like surgeries in the South of England, may have a team of salaried doctors who give continuity of care.
I do feel the surgery is trying hard to improve but it is IMH that needs to manage the practice better with greater investment."
