"The practice now operates a new appointment system. Every patient wanting medical advice has to have a telephone appointment with a doctor of their choice. The doctor then decides whether a face to face appt is needed. Many times it is not and the system works.
The system falls down badly when the patient wants to talk to the doctor about a sensitive issue; depression; domestic violence; gender orientation etc. Telephone appointments are not appropriate for issues like these and the doctor invariably wants to discuss the main areas of concern before even considering a face to face appointment.
As many doctors know, many patients will come to a face surgery complaining of a minor ailment and a skilful and compassionate GP will 'pick up' issues which need urgent attention.
Not so now. The patient never gets to see the doctor. The stats are good for DNAs. I can think of nothing else to commend this appointment system."
