"As a mature student of Nottingham Trent University I signed up to the Student Health Centre in late 2017. I first used the service in October 2017 and was subsequently referred to the Radford Road practice, then onto Woodthorpe Hospital and eventually the QMC where I had surgery to remove a uterine fibroid in April 2018. A few weeks before I had the surgery, I went to the Student Health Centre to see a doctor about some symptoms I'd been having. I assumed that the symptoms were related to the fibroid that I had. I told the doctor about the issues I'd been facing which were quite personal and embarrassing, she also took a look at my records which contain all of the information about my treatment for the fibroid which confirmed what I'd told her. After hearing all I'd said and being well aware of my situation, her only response was for me to do an STI swab and have it tested. I found this quite insulting seeing as I'd told her that I am engaged and not in the position to contract an STI. Furthermore she had it on file that I'd already been routinely tested recently (December 2017) when I went to collect my contraceptive pill and the tests had come back clear. I found it insulting that after knowing about my ongoing condition that the doctor would jump to the conclusion that I'd got an STI, and even insinuate that my partner had been unfaithful and should probably get tested too. Nonetheless, I did the tests and was prescribed antibiotics just in case I had a bacterial infection. A week later I got the test results back and they were all clear which didn't surprise me at all. Only when I decided to take matters into my own hands and see the people at the QMC Circle Treatment centre did I get anywhere. They saw me almost straight away and examined me and upon doing so informed me that the issues I'd been having were due to the fibroid degenerating. The practitioner booked me in for surgery the following week. That is how all places that provide healthcare should be- efficient, professional, caring- I wish I'd have gone straight to the Circle Treatment Centre when I first started having symptoms in mid 2017 because maybe then I wouldn't have had to suffer in pain for half a year waiting for less efficient practices to help me. It seems to me that because the Student Health Centre is a practice for students, the doctors working there lump everyone in together and assume that those going there are all irresponsible young adults riddled with STI's. However some users of the service, like myself, are in serious relationships and do not appreciate being told that they or their partner may have an STI. I dread having to go back here for treatment of any kind."
