"Contacted the surgery to complain about a housebound patient not receiving visits from the nurse to change wound dressings - only to find that the District Nursing team had discharged the patient having decided they were not housebound enough.
Firstly, appalling lack of communication - the District Nursing team did not tell the patient they were being discharged, just suggested that they may want to visit the surgery because they were worried about the lack of independence. The patient told the District Nurse that they could not get to the surgery and arranged transport via myself (next of kin). It appears that the end result is the patient has been discharged from the District Nursing service because they are no longer housebound! The one lift turned into 2 days per week off work for me to accommodate these appointments. The patient was then told the practice needed to see her 3 times a week and told them yet again she could not get there independently.
End result? 91 year old housebound patient now attempting to dress her own wounds. The surgery is quick to point out they don't run the District Nursing service and they won't offer any home visits. Cellulitis has already set in and the only solution the practice can offer? An email to me offering the patient an appointment in 2 hours time... if I can get her to the practice...
Practice does not seem to understand housebound and assume that relatives and next of kin can just take as much time off work as required... and assume that relatives are happy to unpick the various commissioning arrangements they have about who does what and who is responsible for what.
Utter shambles."
